If you have never done interwoven or locking crochet, you can best start with the video tutorials in this playlist: Interwoven or locking crochet. With these videos you can get acquainted with this technique in a simple way. You can first focus on crocheting the 2 filet crochet layers. In these videos I use extra double crochets (that you do not normally do!) for the lower border, the sides and the top border in color 1, and I use a temporary thread for the setup of color 2. This makes the setup a lot easier to do, and you will have less difficulties with the sides. If you look at the picture on the top of this page you will see the ‘official’ version at the right, the version with the extra borders at the left.

When you have mastered this, you can do the practice piece of the Hooked and Locked CAL, or HAL CAL in short. On this page you will find a step by step tutorial with explanations about the pattern charts, how to do the setup without the extra sides of color1, accompanied by a lot of pictures and links to the accompanying videos.
